3D Illustration Project Details

Objective

Design and model a production-ready piece of 3D artwork with hand-painted textures.


Examples
  •  Character — comic, heroic, cute, realistic, caricature, etc.
  •  Creature — animal, monster, mythological, fantasy, alien, robot, etc.
  •  Vehicle — car, motorcycle, airplane, spacecraft, military, historical, whimsical, etc.
  •  Structure — house, cabin, hut, skyscraper, castle tower, shrine, temple, etc.
  •  Set Piece(s) — tree, plants, campsite, room interior, playground, etc.
  •  Prop(s) — furniture, tools, weapons, machines, items, objects, etc.

Criteria

Concept Artwork
  1. drawings of the piece(s) from 2+ different views
  2. 1+ rendering(s) in color

3D Illustration
  1. Low-poly model(s) with efficient, “clean” geometry
  2. Hand-illustrated textures applied to all surfaces
  3. Maya-compatible 3D file with textures in TGA format
  4. Appropriately-lighted rendering of final 3D artwork



Due Dates
  • March 4:      Rough Concept Sketches Due (5+ different ideas)
  • March 6:      Finished Concept Sketches Due (2+ different views)
  • March 13:    Color Rendering of Concept Artwork Due (1+ view in color)
  • March 27:    Rough 3D Model(s) & Rough Textures Due
  • April 8:        Textured 3D Model(s) Due
  • April 19:      FINAL — Revised 3D Art and Renders Due


Expectations
  •  Deliver progress milestones on time
  •  Post images & screenshots to class blog
  •  Use good digital file management practices
  •  Get help when you’re stuck
  •  Utilize available resources (dbs.lib.byu.edu/gnomon)
  •  Focus on quality
  •  Do original work
  •  Hang in there!
