If you're using Maya 2013 on the Mac, you can download and install the Bonus Tools. I got them from area.autodesk.com. They may help with some of the more tedious and difficult aspects of UV mapping. I posted the disk image file in a Dropbox folder where you can download them (even if you don't have a Dropbox account): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/699d4hj0bdczdj9/WIwynvTpQc
Download the .dmg file and double-click it to unpackage and install the bonus tools.
If you scroll down on the following page, there are some short videos that explain what some of these bonus tools for UV mapping are, and how to use them:

I hope that helps. Remember the following dates:
Optional cram session: Wednesday, April 17th, 3:00 - 5:00 pm in F-250
FINAL CRITIQUE: Friday, April 19th, 3:00 - 6:00 pm in F-250.
Let me know if you could use an individual feedback session before Friday and we'll schedule it.
Good luck!
Justin
